Krym approached them with smug slowness. “Allow me to tend to this matter, Sir Locke. You and your companions should stay here and rest. The Maalbolg and I can easily recover your friend.”

The Maalbolg clicked in answer, the ends of his lips twisting in a gruesome, toothy smile. Then the creature held one claw in the air. Rowen wondered what he was doing until the fly that had pestered him earlier landed—as though summoned—on the very tip of the Maalbolg’s claw. The creature made a clicking sound, like a demon cooing at a baby. Then the hand twisted, obscenely fast, pinching the fly between two claws.

I wonder if he could kill Lancers just as easily. Rowen had a feeling that he already knew the answer. He shifted his gaze to Krym, recalling what the Dragonkin had done to Sir Lamrey and his Isle Knights. “No. This must be done without bloodshed. It might not bother you to see Ruun subjected to another war but—”

“There will be no bloodshed,” Krym insisted. “I swear it on the soul of Namundvar. I can pluck the Sylv from their clutches without a single drop of blood being spilled.”

“But they will know it was done with magic,” Rowen countered. “If they were bold enough to take Keswen in the first place, they’re looking for an excuse to fight.”

Igrid said, “All the more reason for you to stay away from them!”

Rowen shook his head. “I’ve known men like their commander. This is a game to him. That’s why he let Vaari and Breaksteel go. It’s a test. If I answer with the right amount of force, he’ll let Keswen go. Any more than that, and—”

“Could be she’s already dead,” Vaari said, scraping under one fingernail with a knife. “Looked like they hit her pretty good. Probably stripped her bare and had some fun afterwards. If she wouldn’t play along with that, they might have—”

“They wouldn’t do that,” Rowen said. Not yet, anyway. He looked at Saanji. “Any chance these are the same Lancers you fought beside at Hesod?”

“I doubt it,” Saanji said. “Royce’s men weren’t the type to club women across the back of the neck. Besides that, I spent most of the campaign blind drunk. But I’ll go with you, just in case.”
